As missionaries, we are blessed to have many opportunities to both give and receive hospitality. Hospitality is more than just entertaining a friend in your home. It is opening your hearts and resources to a stranger. It can be messy and awkward, of course, but through it the Kingdom of God grows. Peter writes in 1 Peter 4:8-10, “8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” We have been privileged to see this level of Biblical hospitality in action here in Norton.
Since we have arrived on Tuesday, we have been fed, toured around town, fed, welcomed in homes, fed, taken on adventures, and then fed some more! We don’t have sufficient words to express our gratitude to all of you that have showered us with love. It truly has felt like one big celebration this entire week! So, in keeping with celebrating, we are including a recipe here from Brazil that you will find at any celebrations, from weddings, to birthdays, to graduations. These are little chocolate truffles called “Brigadeiro’s.”
BRIGADEIROS (makes 20-30)
Ingredients:
1 can of sweetened condensed milk
2 TBS Butter or Margarine (and more for greasing a plate and your hands)
2 TBS cocoa powder
Chocolate Sprinkles
Directions:
Mix sweetened condensed milk, cocoa powder, and butter in a medium pan.
Cook on medium and stir continually until thickened and doesn’t stick to the pan. (This will take around 10-20 minutes. Just trust the process. You will know it’s done when you can part it enough to see the bottom of the pan and the mixture take about three seconds to fill back in the gap. Think more caramel than liquid.)
Remove from heat. Spread in an even layer on a buttered plate to cool down. Feel free to use the fridge.
Once cool, butter your hands and roll the mixture into balls around the size of a grape or up to a ping pong ball. Roll these in chocolate sprinkles. Serve in mini-cupcake wrappers.
We hope you enjoy these sweets just as much as we have enjoyed our time in Norton. May God bless you all for your hospitality and love!
In Him,
Beth, Jonathan, Miriam, and Jonah Todd
