A Note from the Pastor…
As we begin to look forward to Easter, (and as we begin a new sermon series leading up to Easter), I cannot help but look back at my childhood and how my family celebrated Easter. Our church, (and therefore our family) did not celebrate “Lent” in any fashion that I can remember. We didn’t fast, we didn’t attend special services, and I don’t recall hearing the Pastor mention it. However, our local Catholic Church did have a “Catfish Fry” every Friday evening during Lent – and my grandfather loved to go to the Catholic Parish and eat fish with the rest of the community, (we also voted at the Catholic Church when I was a child – but that is a different story).
As I child, Easter was celebrated with an Easter basket, candy, egg hunts, dinner at my grandparent’s house, and new clothes. My sister always received a new Easter dress, and I am sure that I got new dress clothes to look my best, (although I don’t remember any “outfit” specifically). Our church would have a great crowd, the ladies would wear an Easter hat, and we would all look our best as we celebrated the resurrection of our Savior!
Yet Easter in a Christian home should be about more than just eggs, dinner, and “dressing up.” Easter means that our greatest enemy, death, has been conquered. Easter means that our sins are forgiven and we are made right with God thru faith. Easter means that Christ is truly the King and Victor, seated “far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked,” (gotquestions.org). Easter means hope – and that is better than any candy I ever received from the “bunny.” I look forward to celebrating Christ’s Resurrection with you!
