This week, we begin a new sermon series entitled, “More than a Spectator,” where we will be examining the ministry of Silas. We rarely think of Silas without thinking of Paul. He is often viewed as a “sidekick” or merely some kind of “helper” in the work of Paul. Yet, he was a man with a calling from God, gifted by God, sent of the Holy Spirit, to do the work of Jesus Christ!
Sometimes, we not only view some Christians, like Silas, as mere “tagalongs,” but we view our own part of the work of the Kingdom of God as “secondary,” or “unimportant,” or even “non-existent.” As I was preparing this week, an old story to came to mind entitled, “Whose Job Is It, Anyway?” It is a story that makes you smile, it makes you think, and sadly, it is too often the truth. The Work of Christ is a calling all of us are bound to as we follow Jesus. We are all called to be “more than a spectator” to the work of the Gospel. We are ambassadors of Christ! Here’s the story, entitled “Whose Job Is It, Anyway?”
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.
May we be more than mere “spectators” to the work of God around us!
Pastor Chris
