When our daughter was very young, she was afraid of seemingly everything! She was afraid of heights, she was afraid of our dog, and she was terrified of bugs! Not just bees or wasps, but also flies, butterflies, or anything that even resembled a six-legged creature. If there was even a fly in the car – crying and screaming ensued! It was kinda cute for a while, but unsurprisingly, wore thin pretty quickly! No amount of reassurance seemed to help!
However, there were many things that she didn’t know she should “fear” or be cautious about. We had a house in the country, so we were not around many vehicles “just driving by.” When we would get to the parking lot at Wal-Mart, a place she loved as much as I do, I would make her hold my hand every step of the way! As soon as she got out of her car seat, she had to come and take my hand. No running was allowed – and we practiced looking both ways before we crossed the “street,” (the crosswalk in front of the door to enter the store). Interestingly, for the mundane things of life, like crossing the parking lot, Autumn would trust me, without question. However, for the things she feared the most, she struggled to believe me that everything was going to be all right.
As Christians, we sometimes do just the opposite. We trust the Lord when we have no other place to turn, (i.e. when the big struggles of life come knocking on our door and “there is nothing left to do but pray”), but we sometimes struggle to rely upon God every day. Fear, worry, and dread can often consume even the mundane things of our lives – but the Bible reminds us, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you,” (I Peter 5:7 KJV). May we trust Him in ALL we do.
